Eastern Island

Today we spent much of the day on eastern Island, which is just across the channel from Sand Island where I live. There is no one living on Eastern so it seems much more wild than Sand. We saw an adult Short-tailed Albatross on our way to the beach plot that we were cleaning. There are so few Short-tailed Albatross on Midway that this one's band has been read and it is 26 years old and was banded on the Japaneses breeding islands. The Beach we worked on has many WWII installations that are rusting away and we found quite a few WWII era spent shells. Both islands are such an interesting mix of amazing wildlife and WWII history. The first picture shows an adult Short-tailed Albatross and the other 3 show unidentified WWII era military installations.
