One of my first days on Midway, John Miller, the boatman, gave us the $10 tour of the island. He pointed out an old building and said if we were ever bored we should hunt through that warehouse and there was no telling what we might find. This afternoon I followed his advice and I was surprised by what I found. What do you think they are?

Hi Gary,
ReplyDeleteAs one who has done a bit of snow shoeing in years gone by, I am saying that is a pair of snow shoes. What are they doing on Midway? [that might be an unanswerable question}
Regards,
John V.
I agree with John. It's a pair of snow shoes, and I know how they got there. Back in the old days, before global warming, they would use the snow shoes to trudge through up to 3 feet of snow that would occasionally fall in Midway. It was the only way they could get to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Monitoring Station to check on the instruments. It's discussed on page 23 of the manual. Check it out. Kevin
ReplyDeleteThose are a fairly recently made pair of military issue snow shoes.
ReplyDeleteI live in Alaska and have a couple pairs.
They are fairly recently made (Within the last 10 years, I think.)
They're made from manganese, so they're very light.
I wonder how I missed those when I was there last September. I was on the island as a consultant for Chugach on their runway lighting job and thought I had pretty much looked in every nook and cranny. . .
I was looking for a surfboard that was supposedly stashed somewhere but never did find it.
Anyway, I sure envy your stay on Midway.
What an incredible place. I'm close to retirement and will be looking for any way to get back there some time in the future.
It's certainly one of the best places I have ever visited!
Thanks for keeping up on this blog!
