Tuesday on Midway

After a nice day yesterday we got up to rain this morning. We were supposed to do the duck survey on Eastern Island but it was cancelled because of the weather. We will probably spend the day in the office entering data and getting other data proofed. Yesterday we worked in the morning planting bunch grass clones in an area that is being restored. There is a nasty introduced annual here called verbesina which takes over large areas and crowds out nesting birds. It is sprayed and pulled and natives are planted in the treated areas but the verbesina is very difficult to control. The seeds live in the ground for many years so it takes long term effort to even stay up with the problem. In the afternoon we did our albatross plots which measure reproductive success. The picture shows Red-tailed Tropicbirds in nuptual flight.
