The Neighborhood

The area where I live on Midway was once used for officers housing. Directly behind our duplex is Midway house which must have been the house of the commanding officer. I was told that our houses were built for junior officers. Buildings deteriorate very quickly from the salty environment and and the termites. Houses that look nice from the outside have holes in the walls from termite damage on the inside. Our house is concrete block and has been refurbished not long ago and is nice. The vegetation over much of the island is dominated by non-native plants. Originally the island had no trees. Now there are areas that are forested with Ironwood Trees that were brought in by the Trans Pacific cable company and have since flourished. These pictures are all from my immediate neighborhood and the trees are all non-native. The top right picture shows 2 native bushes in our front yard
